Challenge

Since eBay’s launch in 1995, the secondhand goods marketplace had remained largely unchanged. The barriers to entry for both buyers and sellers were significant, limiting the market’s potential. Moreover, existing platforms were designed for a desktop-first world—an approach increasingly outdated in the mobile era. The market was ripe for disruption, but no company had yet reimagined the experience for the modern consumer.

Value Delivered

As the founding product design director, Jeremy played a pivotal role in shaping Stuffle’s success. Partnering with Nico Lumma from Digital Pioneers and Widget Labs, we developed a distinctive visual identity, user experience (UX), and user interface (UI) that prioritized simplicity, trust, and efficiency. The result was a frictionless mobile commerce experience that set a new benchmark for digital classifieds.

Process

Branding

The logo was intentionally made to feel recognizable.

Developing a brand identity that speaks to the core values of human partnership (in this case between buyer and seller) was essential for success. The essence of Stuffle’s branding lies in its ability to encapsulate the principles of care, collaboration, and practicality through its visual elements. Key to this is the integration of the word mark and logo, where the design must harmoniously complement the typography to reinforce brand messaging.

Central to the logo’s impact is the innovative use of a universally recognized symbol—the handshake creatively forming a heart. This emblem not only serves as a visual shorthand for human connection but also elicits an immediate sense of trust and familiarity among consumers. Its elegant simplicity ensures that the logo remains memorable while conveying a utilitarian function that aligns with the brand’s mission.

Product Design

The UI and UX for listing a product on Stuffle

Taking into account Stuffle was designed mobile-first, the user-experience and user-interface had to be as frictionless as possible. This meant removing any unnecessary steps that would enable someone to list a new item. Rather than navigating complex listing processes, users could simply take a photo, provide a brief description, and instantly post their items for sale. In-app messaging replaced cluttered email exchanges, while integrated payment capabilities allowed transactions to be completed seamlessly within the app—an industry first.

Market Impact

Stuffle recognized by Apple for one of the best apps in 2012

Stuffle’s intuitive design and mobile-first approach reshaped the industry, influencing the development of countless digital marketplaces—including Facebook Marketplace. At its peak, Stuffle attracted over one million users and secured more than €7.5 million in funding across two successful investment rounds.

The app’s pioneering UX was widely recognized, earning prestigious accolades such as Apple’s “Best Apps Germany,” the Lovie Award for “Mobile Innovation,” the Lead Award for “Web Service of the Year,” and IPDC’s honor for “Best German iPhone App.” In 2014, Stuffle’s success culminated in its acquisition by Immobilien Scout, solidifying its legacy as one of the first mobile-native marketplaces to redefine digital commerce.
